ADOPT A BOOK: An ongoing program to benefit the library. Families purchase new books for the library, often in recognition of a teacher or child's birthday. During a week-long book fair, classroom teachers and the librarian select and highlight books that complement curriculums and areas of study. These books and others are available to adopt throughout the year.

BACK TO SCHOOL COFFEE: A casual get together the first day of school. Drop your child/children off and meet with other parents over coffee and baked goods provided by the many volunteers at Duveneck.

BACK TO SCHOOL PACKETS: A package of important school documents, letters and informational flyers available for pick up on the Friday before the start of school from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. and the first day of school.

BACK TO SCHOOL STAFF LUNCH: Parent volunteers arrange lunch for teachers and staff once during the first week of school. The parent in charge of this event coordinates volunteers to prepare food and clean up.

BAGEL SALES: Most Thursdays during recess, children can purchase whole or half bagels for a nominal fee. This tradition is a favorite of Duveneck kids. People helping with this activity prepare and serve bagels. Parents may purchase bagel tickets in advance. This is not a fundraiser.

BIKE & TRAFFIC SAFETY: In October, the third grade bicycle rodeo consists of obstacles on the playground that simulate traffic conditions. The person in charge of this event coordinates volunteers, supervises the activity, and promotes pedestrian, bicycle, and automobile safety at the school throughout the year.

BOOK FAIR: In November, parent volunteers set up and coordinate a week-long book sale held in the multipurpose room. Part of the proceeds go to purchase books for the library.

CHILDREN'S THEATRE: An every other year opportunity for children to participate in a dramatic production at Duveneck. Volunteers supervise students and assist with music, costumes, and other activities.

COMPUTER HELP DESK: Provide weekly computer support to teachers for their use of computers the classrooms.

DISPATCH: This bi-weekly newsletter is published by the PTA and used by school staff, administration, teachers, and site council to get important information home to families. The school district and other schools also append information to the Dispatch.

DISPATCH COLLATOR: Requires a couple of hours every other Friday morning to pick up the Dispatch from the District office, add any last minute flyers, and count and assemble for each classroom.

DISPATCH EDITOR: The Dispatch editor assembles and designs the bi-weekly school newsletter and takes it to the District office for copying.

DRAGON DINNERS: Coordinate(s) volunteers to respond to needs for help (emergencies, illness, new babies, etc.).

DUVENECK eNEWS POSTMASTER: Compiles and disseminates timely, brief, Duveneck news by email to parents and staff. Subscribe by sending mail to the postmaster.

DUVENECK SPORTSWEAR: Organizes the sale and distribution of T-shirts and sweats with school logo. The clothes are available in child and adult sizes.

DUVENECK STUDENT NEWSPAPER: Edit, staff and publish the school's student newspaper to provide the student population with opportunities to publish their writing and artwork. Teach and coordinate two staffs of eight to 14 student reporters

E-FUNDRAISING: Volunteers coordinate the school's eScrip and www.SchoolPop.com fundraising programs. Parents list their credit cards, debit cards and grocery cards with eScrip for free; then every time they use these cards with participating merchants, Duveneck earns a percentage of the purchase. SchoolPop is an online shopping site. When people start their shopping at this site and designate Duveneck as the beneficiary, Duveneck earns a percentage of every purchase.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: Work with the Principal on earthquake and emergency plans and supplies. Oversee volunteers from each classroom who inventory classroom emergency supplies each fall.

GIFT WRAP: Help coordinate and oversee the fall gift wrap fund-raiser.

HARVEST CARNIVAL: On Saturday, October 23, 2005, the Harvest Carnival will be held at Duveneck. This is a community-building event that brings families together for fun, games, food and music.

HEAD LICE: Coordinates lice checks with room parents on an "as needed" basis.

HOST NEW FAMILIES: Each new family is assigned a host family. The host family is responsible for calling the new family before school starts and welcoming it to the Duveneck community by offering information, answering questions, making introductions, etc., as needed.

LEGISLATION/SCHOOL BOARD ADVISOR: Attend school board meetings, follow legislation and keep PTA informed.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR: Recruit and schedule volunteers to work in the library during school.

LOST & FOUND: A PTA volunteer maintains the Lost & Found and runs periodic Dispatch reminders to families to retrieve forgotten items. He or she launders unclaimed clothes before donating to the district PTA wardrobe. (Clothing from the PTA Wardrobe is available to the community at large.)

MAY FETE PARADE: Coordinate Duveneck's participation in the May Fete Parade, a Palo Alto community event.

MEMBERSHIP: A PTA volunteer runs the fall membership drive and files the appropriate forms with the PTA Council.

NEW KINDER EVENTS: Arranges get acquainted gatherings during the summer for all kinder families.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Recruits PTA members to fill PTA Executive Board and committee chair positions. Work begins in early Spring to fill positions for the next school year.

NOMINATING REPRESENTATIVE (JORDAN): A fifth grade parent suggests names for Jordan's PTA Executive Board and Committee positions for the next year.

NOON ART: Coordinates monthly art projects offered at noontime organized and supervised by parent volunteers.

NOON GARDENING: Coordinates noontime gardening projects for students.

PIE (PARTNERS IN EDUCATION) REPRESENTATIVE: Represents Duveneck for this District wide fundraising organization. Solicits and coordinates volunteers to help with fundraising. Monies raised will be distributed to all the schools in the Palo Alto Unified School District. Since 2004-2005, these are the only funds which can be used for additional staffing (aides, etc.)

PTA COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE: Attends PTA Council meetings and reports back to Duveneck PTA. PTA Council meets approximately 5 times per year. Each meeting lasts approximately 2-1/2 hours.

PTA WARDROBE: The PTA Wardrobe is located at Jordan Middle School in a portable off Middlefield Road parking lot. It is open Wednesdays from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00-1:00 p.m. Families interested in acquiring clean, used clothing should contact the Duveneck secretary/ principal for a referral letter. Anyone may rent rain boots, snow clothes, costumes, or camping items for a rental fee per child or per adult. There is no referral letter necessary for rentals. Rented items must be returned clean within two weeks. Donations of clean clothing and shoes are gladly accepted, and receipts are available for tax deductions. For information call: 858-0654 during open hours. Donations and volunteers are always welcome and needed.

ROOM PARENT COORDINATOR: Recruits and organizes room parents for each classroom.

SCIENCE FAIR: A PTA sponsored science fair for interested students in every grade. Science projects are created completely by the children with assistance by adult mentors.

SPRING EVENT: A Friday or Saturday night family get together centered around an all school dinner and community building events. This event is planned and executed by parent volunteers.

SPRUCE-UP DUVENECK DAY: Volunteers contribute their time to make facility improvements such as painting, pruning, gardening, and small building and repair projects.

STUDENT DIRECTORY: The student directory is prepared in the fall by a parent volunteer and office staff. The directory is distributed to all families.

TEACHER APPRECIATION: Parent volunteers organize parents to supply treats for teachers on Fridays in the teachers' lounge and plan an event in the Spring in recognition of teachers.

TECHNOLOGY: Oversees the classrooms' and media center's hardware and software needs and advocates for the enhancement of technology resources.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR: Coordinates and helps recruit for all school volunteer needs.

WELCOME NEW FAMILIES NIGHT: All new families are invited to an evening orientation at school during the first week of school. Childcare is provided.

YEARBOOK: Volunteers assemble and arrange for production of the annual yearbook available in June. The committee works throughout the school year assembling the book as well as organizing yearbook purchase and distribution.
